A quick flow of event:

  •  The event was opened through a ‘Career Parade’. It depicted a school student trying to decide which career to choose in 2 eras - the 1980s and 2012. The 1980s had very less no. of careers to choose from-Hence not much dilemma. There were a lot more careers to choose from in 2012 hence the student was very much confused regarding which career to opt for. The ‘Career Parade’ opened the stage for Career Duvidha.
  •  ‘Career Parade’ was followed by ONE Foundation video. After which Deepak Menaria, a founding member of ONE Foundation apprised the audience about ONE Foundation and also outlined the purpose of Career Duvidha program. Deepak invited Dr. Suresh Chari, Founding member and Softskills trainer for the main part of the event.
  •  After a small clip on ‘Rohan ki Kahani’ – the story of a young boy Rohan, Dr. Chari conducted a verbal audience poll was conducted to gather inputs on topics like ‘ Can our dreams and passions be translated into career?’, ‘More career choices today has led to more confusion’, ‘Today’s education system is not kept pace with the Industry requirements’, ‘Coaching classes – necessary or nuisance’ , ‘Personality development is necessary and is equally important as academic growth.’
  • Dr. Surendra Gole spoke on the Managing careers. He stressed on the fact – ‘All careers are good but all careers are not good for everybody.’ He advised parents to provide more exposure to their children on various career options. He advised children that it will be good if they can have a career in the field they like else they will have to start liking the career they get. The concept of safety net or back up was explained by Dr. Gole.                                                                                                                                                                                                                   This was followed by the main piece of the program - a group discussion on various dilemmas related to career between group of students, group of parents and panel of experts which comprised of :
  1.  Vilas Kale (Entrepreneur and Social Worker)
  2.  Dr. Prabodh Yelne (Spiritual Psychotherapist)
  3.  Poonam Menaria (Career Counsellor)
  4.  Shashikant Chaudhary (Serial Entrepreneur)
  • . There was very active participation of Students and parents in the discussion. Few questions were taken from audience as well. A few of the questions around which the discussions revolved included:
  1.  Can dreams and passions be converted into career?
  2.  Will availability of multiple career choices today lead to more confusion in choosing careers?
  3.  Is it justified for the parents to pressurize their children to realize their own unfulfilled dreams?
  4.  Should parent’s s encourage passion in their children to be a possible career choice moving ahead? If so, on which  parameters?
  5.  Is today’s education system is not kept pace with the Industry requirements? Should today’s education system be blamed for their ward’s failure?
  6.  To be an entrepreneur, is it a must to have a strong financial background?
  7.  Are coaching classes necessary?
  8.  Is a backup career plan necessary while trying to pursue career of choice.
  9.  Is it important to develop soft skills along with academic skills to be successful in future?
  •  Closure: Efforts of Anurag Kulkarni from Sa Digital were appreciate towards movie and videos from the event. A thank you note followed by national anthem.                                                                                                                                                                                                     HIGHLIGHTS
  •  All careers are good but all careers are not good for everybody.
  •  Parents should provide more exposure to their children on various career options.
  •  With exposure to various fields, students are able to understand the intricacies of the profession and develop likes or dislikes for it.
  •  It will be good if children can get in the field they like else they will have to start liking the career they get.
  •  Education must not be neglected as it helps to widen one’s vision and perspective.
  •  One will excel in a career about which on is passionate about.
  •  Passions and dreams can be converted into career with strong family support.
  •  Earning money is important and the earned money can be spent on one’s passion,
  •  There are over 150 career options and over 320 graduation courses to choose from. One has to choose from them carefully by assessing aptitude, passion, interest, preparedness for excelling in it and support system.
  •  Due to the availability of multiple career options today, while it is difficult rather than confusing to make the right career choice, because of the variety of career options available, it gives the confidence that children would have a career in some field or the other.
  •  Any confusion about making the right choice amongst the many career options available is more with parents than children.
  •  At a young age, as children does not have much exposure and knowledge, it will be incorrect to call any of their interests at that age as passion. As it can be a passing whim or fantasy which can change over a period of time. The passion of children can be correctly understood after consulting with a professional career counselor.
  •  It is incorrect for a parent to pressurize their children to follow career of their choice (especially if it is an unfulfilled dream) as the child has to bear the consequences of an incorrect career choice lifelong. Hence parents need to explain the logic, purpose, vision behind choosing a career. It will be better if children are exposed to that career so that he/she will get full knowledge about that career so that they can decide whether it would be the right career to choose.
  •  It will be incorrect to blame only the education system for the non-progress of children.
  • To start one’s business, he most important thing is to have a business idea. Today, more than 100 business incubators have been formed for promoting innovative ideas among new entrepreneurs. Such centers provide financial , facility and other support to the people starting their entrepreneurial ventures. E.g. the business incubator at VNIT provides new entrepreneurs financial support of Rs. 25 lacs and 2-years free facility. This has created a lot of opportunities especially for middle-class youth to start their own business.
  •  Attending coaching classes should only be based on necessity rather than as a trend/fashion or peer pressure.
  •  A backup career plan or two are necessary while trying to pursue career of choice as one has options available in case he/she is not able to get the career of his/her choice.
  •  To succeed in one’s chosen career, it is important to maximize on your strengths and at the same time have a reasonable knowledge of other areas like soft skills.
  •  It will be appropriate to migrate to other cities for professional courses to earmark a suitable career rather than just following a trend.
